Local Content (best performance)

External Sites (performance may be an issue)

BrowsePal is still under development, so many sites may not work properly, and the system may be very slow. So while we work on these issues, here are a few sites that you may want to try.

ChinesePod.com

ChinesePod.com is one of the most popular ways that people are learning Chinese online. Chinesepod seems to work fairly well with BrowsePal and one of the site's popular uses with BrowsePal is for paying subscribers to view the lesson transcripts together, or with a tutor. Specifically, tutors located in China can talk to the student using Skype, while the student reads the transcripts and gets feedback on tones and character definitions. The sections on pronunciation have also been useful to some students using BrowsePal. If you're not yet a paying subscriber of ChinesePod.com, check out their Integrated Chinese Blog for a sample.

Integrated Chinese

Integrated Chinese is a popular textbook used in Chinese college courses. The site www.language.berkeley.edu/ic has online text from the lessons that can be shared and studied with a friend or tutor using BrowsePal (along with Skype or a phonecall). Just go to the table of contents, click on the lesson that you want to share, and select the desired material. Note: many of the lessons have audio, and playback will not be coordinated between the browser and viewer (if it even works at all), so it's usually best to stop it.

For Tutors

International tutors will hopefully find BrowsePal useful. Many tutors, such as Chinese citizens, have been earning money by tutoring online. This usually consists of Skype phone calls to practice conversation, and sites like ChinesePod.com and www.chinese-forums.com have been used to match up tutors and students. Browsepal can be used by tutors and students to practice reading and pronunciation of online chinese text, such as those listed above.

If you are a tutor, you can use BrowsePal to simply surf to one of the sites listed above (or other material that you've found). By sharing the link with the student, they will see the same content that you see in your browser, and they can read the text aloud to you, as you correct their definitions and pronunciation. To do this, simply:
  1. Enter the desired web page in the box at the top of the BrowsePal page, and click 'go'.
  2. Click 'share' in the menubar, and send to the link to the student, either with Skype, or a chat program or email.
  3. That's it. The student should now be able to see the content that you are viewing on your BrowsePal page, even as you navigate the web, as long as you keep using the BrowsePal site. With conference calling, you can even hold online classes and teach many students at once.
Alternatively, if you are using Skype, simply set your Skype "mood" to be your BrowsePal sharing link. Then, anyone that can see you on Skype can view your BrowsePal session simply by clicking on the link in your Skype profile.
